JAPANESE RELIGION
The oldest religion in Japan is known as Shintoism meaning the way of the gods. The japanese people pray to spirits known as Karmi which were not only humans but birds beasts and natural features like mountains, trees and rivers.
There are two different types of kami: the main kami that have always existed since the beggining of time they are the kami of the dead and of nature. The other type of kami is the spirits of people and nature. When someone dies their spirit goes into the world as a kami. These kami are very similar to humans and are not always good, in fact some are very evil.
The chief kami of Shintoism is the Sun Goddess, Amaterasu Omikami, it is believed that her grandson Ninigi, was the first emperor of Japan. Izanagi-no-mikoto and Izanami-no-mikoto are the kami that gave birth to the Japanese islands.
